When installing a motor, make sure the coupling is the specified distance from the motor face. Failure to correctly locate the coupling on the motor shaft may cause axial thrust loads, which can result in premature failure of either the motor bearings or the adapter bearings.
How Oil is Affected By The Correct Mounting Position
Specifying the correct mounting position is often difficult for users. They may not know how the gearbox will be mounted yet or may not understand how the manufacturer labels the positions. However, knowing the mounting position is vital. It determines the gearbox’s oil quantity, which ensures all gears and bearings are properly lubricated.
Problems with Too Much or Too Little Oil in the Gearbox
Problems can arise if there is too much or too little oil. Too much oil limits the area for thermal expansion during operation. This creates pressure on the seals, which could eventually lead to seal failure. Too little oil in the unit means critical components may not be properly lubricated, which can also result in failure.
Manufacturers make other modifications depending on the mounting position. For example, some gearboxes use Nilos Rings and Shielded bearings to lubricate bearings not in the oil bath. Others use double seals on outputs to withstand the weight of the oil pressing against them. Larger gearboxes utilize breathers to relieve thermal expansion pressure.
